Writing Jaws Scripts

Jaws comes bundled with all the necessary tools for creating and amending scripts. These, and additional resources, available from Freedom Scientific, are detailed below.

Jaws Script Manager

Jaws scripts are written and compiled in the Script Manager, the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that comes bundled with Jaws.

An introduction to the Script Manager can be found in the Jaws documentation, along with an overview of scripting itself.

  • Use the Jaws key command, Insert j, to bring up the Jaws menu.
  • Move to the Help menu and select "Jaws Help Topics".
  • In the help file that opens, navigate to Customizing Jaws for Windows, and select the Script Manager book.
  • Use F6 to move to the first topic in this section.

Getting Started

If you are new to Jaws scripting, download the Basics of Scripting Manual. The manual provides an introduction to scripting for Jaws and other Freedom Scientific products. It comes as a self extracting zip archive, which unpacks to a Windows help file (.chm).
