What Are Jaws Scripts?

Jaws scripts act as a bridge between the screen reader and a specific application. Jaws comes bundled with several scripts for common applications already, but there are still a great many programs that Jaws finds difficult to work with.

Scripts can be written by third parties, independently of Freedom Scientific. They can be downloaded and installed on your computer, where they will enable Jaws to work with a particular application.

Installing Jaws Scripts

Jaws v6.x and later

  • Go to the folder where the new scripts are stored.
  • Select all the script files, using Control a, and copy them, using Control c.
  • Open the Start Menu, move to Programs, or All Programs, and press the right arrow.
  • Move to the Jaws program group, and press the right arrow.
  • Press the right arrow to open the Explore Jaws menu.
  • Select Explore My Settings, to open Windows Explorer at the Jaws user settings folder.
  • Paste the script files into the user settings folder, using Control v.

Alternatively, you can take the short route:

  • Go to the folder where the new scripts are stored.
  • Select all the script files, using Control a, and copy them, using Control c.
  • Use Windows Explorer to go to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.0\Settings\enu\.

Substitute your account name where username is given in the path above, and replace 6.0 for the version of Jaws you are running.

  • Select all the script files, using Control a, and copy them, using Control c.
