Is it possible to even have a web based wysiwyg editor without using JavaScript?

No, by definition anything you recognise as a WYSIWYG editor requires behaviour, therefore scripting of some type.

You can do one without JavaScript - by using a plugin, which is what XStandard does. Using the Flash plugin might also be an option, although I'm not sure how HTML friendly it is.

Honestly, I think it's such a difficult issue (due to all browsers abysmal handling of HTML production), I wouldn't bother.

TinyMCE seems to be making good progress and it quite customisable, the WYSIWYM editor might be worth looking at aswell. And of course XStandard has been in the lead code-wise for a while, if you're happy with using a plugin.

I'm pretty picky about accessibility standards and love the idea of a good quality wysiwyg editor. At the moment I'm trying to pick one I can use in my CMS but I'd love to build one which writes good code. Anyone have any tips on where to start? I'd really like to try and tackle this problem but I'm curious. Is it possible to even have a web based wysiwyg editor without using JavaScript?
